This recipe has been such a nourishing addition to our arsenal of wintertime remedies, and it’s one that your whole household will love. Featuring two of TCM’s best seasonal allies, these gummies are perfect for a cough that’s dry and scratchy. Both Tremella and pear are classified as medicinal foods that are deeply supportive to the Lungs and help combat Dryness, one of the six external pathogens that can disturb the balance of Qi (life force energy). This invasive force is not only a cause of illness, but it can also prolong the time it takes to recover from illness. Whether you have a lingering cough, need some support moisturizing from the inside out, or appreciate a nutritive immune boost, this sweet treat has you covered.
Pear and Tremella are tremendous allies for replenishing the body’s natural moisture during this crucial time, mitigating Dryness, tonifying the respiratory system, and enhancing our defensive capabilities. Dryness tends to affect the Lungs, leading to respiratory issues like dry coughs, sore throat, and shortness of breath. In addition to our Lungs, the skin and digestive system are likewise highly susceptible; these are three innate pathways of elimination that our immune system relies upon to release toxins from the body. Further highlighting the connection to immunity, our Wei Qi (the protective shield guarding our bodies) is produced by the Lungs and governs our skin, enhancing its function as an actual barrier capable of deflecting pathogenic entities. Due to its impact on overall bodily fluids, excess Dryness can also negatively affect digestion, causing constipation that results in the reabsorption of toxins.
Tremella is indicated for those who are immunocompromised, pointing not only to its support in protecting but also in promoting healing. This special “snow fungus” has high amounts of polysaccharides—a unique kind of antioxidant that promotes robust immunity by stimulating white blood cell activity. It’s classified as sweet in TCM, highlighting its building properties that gently support replenishment and recalibration. Pear is also classified as sweet and sour, thus helping to resolve phlegm. Amazingly, pear helps to relieve Dampness (another external pathogen) despite its moistening properties, reminding us that an inherently balanced food or herb helps us cultivate internal harmony. As a cooling food, it even helps to clear Heat, yet another pathogenic force that expresses as excess warmth, inflammation, and overactivity in the body, all of which can be present during a time of illness.
